JAMESTOWN
Hello everyone!
Second last exchange student weekend was in Jamestown, New York. It is terrifying to think that next time is the last time we all spend time together.. I have made so many good friends from these people and I don't want to say bye to them.
It was almost summer in Jamestown already, all the trees had leafs and sun was shining the whole weekend. We spend the weekend exploring the city, partied and spend lot of time with each other. Lot of hugging, laughing, dancing and eating. These weekends are the best, it is hard to get back to our normal school life after spending one weekend with seventeen different nationalities.
I would have had so much more fun than I did if I haven't been sick the whole weekend. I've had flu for three weeks now and I'm starting to lose my mind because of it. I can't run, I can't concentrate at school, I feel terrible and nothing will work... I have tried everything but it just stays. I should be running a triathlon in a month but I can't train for it which isn't a good thing. Oh well, I just hope for the best I guess.
I'll be back soon with new things and thoughts, now I will go take a nap because when you are sick that's the only thing you can really do... See you later!

I'VE GOT A LOT OF EXISTING TO DO
Whoo I am here!
A lot of new pictures from my past couple of days. I haven't been in school since last Thursday and it is not because I am skipping, it is because life is keeping me super busy and lot of nice things are happening right now. Last months of exchange are full of activities and things to do and I ain't complaining.
Like I briefly said on Friday, I didn't have school on that day. We had P.A day which means teachers go to school but students won't. I decided to use the day and do something useful with myself and I first time in a while I actually managed to do that. I made a video from that day, so you can see what I actually did and what was going on. Couple of the last clips are from Saturday, because I didn't have any plans for the day either so I kept doing things that needed to be done before Monday or the end of the month.
Sunday and Monday I spent at MacMaster University playing waterpolo. Two long days I spent at the pool playing a sport that I am actually good at and I really enjoy playing it. I've always played sports but for the past couple years I haven't been part of any team. I ended up playing waterpolo kinda by accident and I am super happy that I did. I have a long background of swimming and diving, so water is really familiar element for me. I was the goalie of our team, but in this tournament I also played out which was even more fun than being a goalie. I have started searching for teams in Finland and if I get lucky, I will continue playing this sport there too.
Tuesday, yesterday, was nice day. One of my rotarians took me to a play on Stratford and after that we walked at the town for a bit before coming home. I was a warm and sunny day, the town was pretty quiet because the tourist season isn't started yet. It was nice to have the city "for yourself" and be able to stop when you wanted to where you wanted.
Some other nice things from past week, one of them definitely is the weather. It is super sunny and warm, during the weekend it was almost +30 degrees. Now the temperature has gone down a little, but it is still nice and warm. Spring is definitely here and I can see how it effects my mood. I am so much happier and my attitudes are so much more positive than they used to be. I've seen some Finnish relatives from Toronto and I have learned new thing from my family roots. I have so much energy and ideas right now so I can't wait to start working with them.
Check my video, subscribe me on Youtube. I will start uploading more stuff there and I might not upload them to blog the same time they come out on Youtube.
I'll back very soon, weekend is going to be full of fun things and I know I will have lot of photos to post. Bye bye!

VIDEO
Hey everyone!
Yesterday I had a day off from school, so I did all my homework and tried some new make up tricks. Then I decided to film a video and spend way too much time taking selfies. Check the video and tell me what you think, should I make more? Hope you like it, yay.
It's been such a lovely weather for past couple of days and I try to spend more time outside, I think I will take my book and go sit in the sun and read. We will see soon again, lot of things to talk about next week!
Bye!

WADAPP
Long time and no post from my daily life. What is actually going on in my life, what I am doing or how am I feeling. Some photos from past weeks and let me just talk.
Hmm, let's start with the obvious thing which is school. It is keeping me busy, a lot of things to do. Projects and assignments, but I am not stressing about any of that. I enjoy school a lot right know, it is fun to go there every morning and I can't wait to see what happens in the future. My language skills are getting really good, I understand everything that we are taught in our social psychology class and that is a big step for me.
I have tried to spend lot of time with friends, I know they are busy with work and school so I understand if we won't see after school during week. Waterpolo is a big thing in my life right know too, I might have found a team sport that I actually enjoy playing. Our team is doing really well, our team spirit is good and we get along really well. It has been fun to learn a new sport and get to know all those girls!
I don't know what else to say, life is going really good right now! I have some school work that I need to do and I really don't want to but sometimes you just have to suck it up and do it. Four months left my exchange and it freaks me out, time is going so fast that I feel I can't even blink my eyes because I might miss another month.
I know I haven't posted monthly favorites video on youtube or the blog, I don't have space on my computer to save the video so I can't do it this month. I need to figure out how to get more space here, I might just go and buy a big memory stick and move all my photos in it.. I really hate stuff like this, takes energy and effort to do such things.
I'll be back hopefully really soon, see you guys then! Bye!

IT'S MOVING DAY
Kuten moni teistä jo
varmasti tietääkin, yksi suurimmista eroista Rotary vaihdossa on
alusta. Normaalisti pysyt kuitenkin samassa koulussa, joten sinun ei tarvitse
sentään ihan alusta aloittaa. Jokainen perhe on erilainen, joten ensimmäisenä
iltana pitää käydä läpi talon sääntöjä ja tutustua tulevaan perheeseen.
Ensimmäinen viikko on aina hankalin, et tunne oloasi kotoisaksi ja olet
enemmänkin vieras kuin perheenjäsen. Normaalisti aika auttaa, alat asettua
aloillesi ja tunnet perheen paremmin.
Perheiden vaihtamisen
takana on monta syytä. Ensimmäisenä syynä on se, että halutaan vaihto-oppilaan
näkevän erilaisia tapoja ja perheiden vaihtaminen antaa aina erilaisia
mahdollisuuksia. Opit arvostamaan omaa kotia ihan eritavalla kuin ennen,
ymmärrät että jokainen perhe elää erilailla. Toisena syynä on sitoutuminen.
Kolme kuukautta tai kymmenen kuukautta on ihan eri asia. Perhe on lupautunut
ottamaan sinut jäsenekseen, mutta kymmenen kuukauden sitoutuminen voi
kauhistuttaa joitakin. Taloudellisti sitoutuminen voi joillekin myös on
haastavaa, yksi suu lisää ruokittavaa on aina kevennys kukkarossa.
Minulla on nyt kokemusta
molemmista, vaihto-oppilaana olemisesta sekä isäntäperheenä olemisesta. Olen
on ottaa vaihto-oppilas kotiin. En kuitenkaan tiedä mitä kaikkea sanoisin,
joten jos teille jäi jotain kysymyksiä, kysykää rohkeasti. Jos kysymyksiä tulee
paljon, vastaan niihin erillisellä postauksella.
Tänään on muuttopäivä,
kolmas ja viimeinen perhe. Aika jännää miten tätäkin kokemusta on jäljellä enää
neljä kuukautta… Palaillaan taas!
As many of you may already know, the
biggest difference between Rotary exchange and “regular” exchange is that
rotary students have to change families during their year. You may have your
own opinions about that, but I think it is a good idea.
Changing families is really hard
emotionally and physically, especially if you have made good connections with
your current family. Just in three months you have learned to say that your
host mom is your mom, host dad is your dad and sisters are your sisters. Again you
have to say goodbye to people, again you have pack everything you own and start
from the beginning. Normally you stay in same school the whole year, so you
don’t have really start from the beginning. Each family is different so the
first night goes fast when you try to get to know them and their rules. First
week is the hardest, you don’t really feel like you belong there and you are
more like quest than family member. Time helps with this too, you start feeling
more comfortable in the new house and you know the family better.
There are many reasons why exchange
students change their families. First reason I can think of is that, they want
students to see and learn different ways of living. You will learn to
appreciate your own home in whole new level, you will understand that every
family lives their lives differently. Other reason is commitment. Three months
is different than eight. This family has promised to host you and take you to
be part of their family, but to commit to do that for ten months can sound and
feel overwhelming and intimidating. Also, financially, it is a big commitment.
One extra mouth to feed can for some be too much.
I have experience of being both, exchange
student in host family and hosting a student in my house. I will be forever
grateful for my families here in Canada, all of them have taken to be part of
their families and I haven’t had any big problems with any of them. I have
learned new sides of myself, I appreciate home more than I did before. You will
respect your host family a whole other way than you respect your own and that
is wrong. The only difference between host family and your own family is that
your host family volunteered to host you.
I really would like to tell you more about
being a host family or living in one, but I don’t know what to tell more. So,
if you have anything to ask, feel free to leave a comment and I will answer
them as soon as I can. If there are lot of questions, I will answer them in
other post.
Today is moving day, third and last family.
It is pretty funny how there is only four months left this experience… See
ya soon!
